Hints

  1. The Old Fashioned should be based around a type of whisk(e)y you enjoy. Even though it was initially made with rye, you can enjoy it with bourbon, scotch, or even a blend of whisk(e)ys. This recipe also works with other spirits, such as rum or tequila.

  2. Using rich simple syrup will provide more body (and less dilution) to the drink. Consider using Demerara or Brown sugar for the syrup if you feel it will pair well with your choice of whisk(e)y. Alternatively, you could use good quality Maple Syrup instead.

  3. You can play around with both the amount and the type of bitters that you use in this cocktail. Consider making a mix of bitters depending on the type of whisk(e)y you selected.

Trivia

  1. The oldest definition of cocktail was in 1806, in The Balance and Columbian Repository, and it described it as being “composed of a spirit of any kind, sugar, water and bitters”. The writing mentions that it is vulgarly called a bittered sling.

  2. As bartenders explored different ingredients and combinations, the name Old Fashioned, perhaps, indicated an older method of making a drink, but not a particular recipe. It could refer to drinks made “the old fashioned way”, without liqueurs or syrups, for example.
