Carajillo

Ingredients

  • 30ml your choice of spirit or liqueur
  • 60ml espresso
  • 1 tbsp sugar (optional)

Instructions

  1. Add the spirit or liqueur and (optionally) the sugar to a see-through cup or lowball glass.

  2. Heat up the mixture in the microwave for 30 seconds.

  3. Slowly layer espresso on top by pouring over the back of a spoon.

Hints

  1. Different cultures and regions use different spirits or liqueurs to make a Carajillo. Commonly, you'll see it made with brandy, rum, whisk(e)y or tequila. Otherwise anise or herbal liqueurs are very popular as well.

  1. The most common story surrounding the creation of the drink tells that it originated in Cuba, during its war of Independence with Spain, when a Spanish soldier brought back the recipe after not liking the taste of coffee on its own.

  2. The name Carajillo could mean "Quick Courage", referring to its use among soldiers to disregard their own safety and launch into battle.

  3. Other cultures have similar drinks, the Scandinavian Karsk is coffee and whisky. Portuguese Café com cheirinho (coffee with a scent) is often made of coffee and brandy.
