Ingredients

  • 22.5ml vodka
  • 22.5ml white rum
  • 15ml blue Curaçao
  • 90ml pineapple juice
  • 22.5ml lime juice
  • 30ml simple syrup

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients into a shaker with ice.

  2. Shake until chilled.

  3. Strain into a hurricane glass filled with crushed ice.

  4. Garnish with a pineapple wedge and a cocktail umbrella.

Hints

  1. You can make this drink in a blender, which will dilute the cocktail slightly more (which might be exactly what you want on a hot day).

  2. Use fresh pineapple juice, if possible. It will make a huge difference in terms of flavor. Making it is fairly easy and you can make it a day or two in advance.

  1. The Blue Hawaii was created around 1957 by Harry Yee at the Hilton Hawaiian Village Beach Resort & Spa in Waikiki. Yee was contacted by Dutch distiller Bols in order to create a cocktail that would feature blue curaçao.

  2. This cocktail is believed to be named after a song of the same name written for the film Waikiki Wedding (1937).

  3. Harry Yee was one of the first (if not the first) bartender to use cocktail umbrellas and orchids as garnishes for his drinks.

  4. There’s also a 1961 movie called Blue Hawaii, featuring Elvis Prestley.
