  2. Top with club soda, stir lightly.

  3. Garnish with an orange slice or wedge.

  4. Serve with a straw.

Hints

  1. If you want a slightly less bitter version, simply shake the ingredients with ice first. The added dilution will make for a more laid back cocktail.

  2. Even though the original recipe uses lemon juice, we find that Campari pairs a lot better with lime juice. Compare the two and see which one you like best!

  3. This recipe should be in your back pocket at all times. This is a crowd pleaser, especially if you know your guests enjoy something like an Aperol Spritz.

  4. The bitter element is well balanced by the sweet and sour flavors, making this a very refreshing summer drink. If you’re still wary of its bitterness, try the alternative of shaking the cocktail with ice first. The cocktail will remain flavorful but will be a little less challenging to your audience.

  5. If you pour the club soda gently onto the ice, you’ll create a color transition. It’s a nice visual element that will add to your presentation. Remind your guest to swirl the drink with the straw you hopefully provided if you don’t see them doing it, though!

Trivia

  1. This cocktail was a collaboration between New York bartenders Zach Gelnaw-Rubin and Abraham Hawkins, and it was named after the Oscar-winning, 1948 Italian film of the same name.

  2. The name is most likely a nod to the Bicicletta, a similar cocktail that involves Campari, white wine and soda water.
