Ingredients

  • 22.5ml rye whiskey
  • 22.5ml Cognac
  • 22.5ml sweet vermouth
  • 15ml Bénédictine
  • 2 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 2 dashes Peychaud's bitters

Garnish

Lemon twist or Maraschino cherry

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients to a mixing glass with ice.

  2. Stir until chilled.

  3. Strain into a rocks glass with or without ice.

  4. Twist a lemon peel over the drink to express the essential oils and garnish with the twist.

Hints

  1. Much like in the Modern Sazerac, the split base of rye whiskey and Cognac play really well together.

  2. Jean-félix from Truffles on the Rocks elevates this cocktail by fat washing the Cognac with cacao butter.

  1. Created in the 1930s at the Carousel Bar in New Orleans by Walter Bergeron. The Carousel Bar is inside the Hotel Monteleone and features an actual carousel where guests sit.

  2. The name Vieux Carré means “Old Square” in French, and it refers to New Orleans’ French Quarter.

  3. This cocktail is a celebration of the mixture of cultures that American was undergoing at the time: Cognac and Bénédictine from France, Italian vermouth and American rye whiskey.
