Hints

  1. This cocktail is often served blended, or over crushed ice. Some people prefer it served straight. It’s down to your preference.

  2. If you can’t find fresh passionfruit in your area, look for frozen passionfruit pulp. The pulp along with sugar and water can be used to make passionfruit syrup (see our recipe for more Hints).

Trivia

  1. Created by Phillipino bartender José “Popo” Galsini in 1967 at the Kona Kai in Huntington Beach, California, USA.

  2. The Saturn was originally called an X-15, after a rocket-powered research aircraft that, among other things, looked to be able to fly above the atmosphere, and at hypersonic speeds.

  3. As the story goes, the engineers who worked on the aircraft frequented Galsini’s bar at the time, and this drink was an homage to their work.

  4. Galsini changed the name of the drink after failed test flights brought the untimely demise of some of its pilots.

  5. The Saturn was the winner of the 1967 International Bartender’s Association (IBA) World Championships.
