Hints

  1. While it will yield a different tasting cocktail, if you don’t have pineapple rum, you can still try to make this recipe using aged rum. Later on, if you get (or make your own!) pineapple rum, try to compare the two side by side and identify the differences when using each rum.

  2. This cocktail is a reconstruction of the original Surfer on Acid (equal parts Jägermeister, coconut rum and pineapple juice). It takes most of the original flavors of the cocktail (it swaps coconut for almonds) and presents them in a different way.

  3. Notice, in particular, that it took the initial template and added sweet and sour elements. Other cocktails, like the Negroni Sour, follow this same principle. Try to do the same with some of your favorites: For instance, try adding lemon juice and simple syrup to a Boulevardier. You’ll have to balance these new elements and adjust them to your taste, but that’s part of the fun of experimenting with new recipes!

  4. Jägermeister often gets a bad rap because of the way it has been used in bars and nightclubs. Don’t let that bad reputation (or your own past experiences) steer you away from this drink or any other that calls for it. Jägermeister is a great ingredient that brings interesting, herbal flavors to add to cocktails.
