Hints

  1. This recipe was built around the use of Amaro Nonino. Using other Amaro will undoubtedly result in a different cocktail. However, if you can’t get a hold of the Friulian liqueur, try Amaro Montenegro, the most commonly used replacement.

  2. Use a higher proof bourbon so it can stand up to the amari present in the recipe.

  3. Sam Ross, the creator of this cocktail, recommends being careful not to overly shake this drink, lest it becomes watery and loses the texture brought by the Amaro Nonino.

  4. One of countless variations of the Last Word, this version brings a bitter element to pair up with the sweet and sour already present in the cocktail. Can you come up with the next Last Word variation?

Trivia

  1. Created by Sam Ross circa 2008 for the opening menu of The Violet Hour in Chicago. It’s named after an M.I.A. track which Ross had been listening to during that time. It’s a variation on the Last Word using Ross’ favorite amaro.
