Always be gentle when adding a carbonated drink to a cocktail, this will ensure that you lose the least amount of fizziness.

Your selection of root beer is key! Most popular root beer brands will tend to overpower the drink with their sweetness. If you can find better options, you will add complexity in the form of spicy notes. 

This cocktail is a prime example of taking an existing drink, the Colorado Bulldog, and elevating it by swapping one or two ingredients: Vodka and cola were replaced by rum and root beer, respectively. New, delicious recipes do not have to be created from scratch! If you ever find a cocktail that seems lacking, follow what you learned here and you might end up creating a new modern classic.
