Ingredients

  • 22.5ml vodka
  • 22.5ml gin
  • 22.5ml tequila blanco
  • 22.5ml white rum
  • 22.5ml triple sec
  • 22.5ml lemon or lime juice
  • 22.5ml simple syrup
  • Coca-Cola, for topping off (60ml)

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients, except for the Coca-Cola, into a shaker.

  2. Add ice and shake until chilled.

  3. Strain into a Highball glass with ice.

  4. Top with Coca-Cola.

  5. Garnish with a lemon wheel.

Hints

  1. You should only add a small amount of Coca Cola when topping off this drink. You’re only looking to change the cocktail’s color, making it look like tea.

  2. You can vary the strength in your Long Island Iced Tea by decreasing or increasing the measurement of each spirit. Just make sure to use the same quantity for all the alcoholic ingredients.

  3. For a sweeter alternative, you can replace the triple sec with crème de cacao, and the lemon juice and simple syrup with ice cream.

Trivia

  1. Most likely the creation of Robert “Rosebud” Butt in 1972 at Oak Beach Inn in Long Island, New York. Butt claims he created the drink for a contest which required creating a cocktail with triple sec.

  2. There is another claim to the creation of this drink from the 1920s, in a local community named Long Island in Kingsport, Tennessee. In it, Charlie “Old Man” Bishop, who was an illegal liquor distiller, made a similar drink which combined rum, vodka, tequila, whiskey, gin and a bit of maple syrup.

  3. Later on, in the 1940s, his son, Ransom Bishop, tweaked the recipe by adding lime and lemon juice, as well as cola or soda water.
