Garibaldi

  • 45 - 60ml Campari
  • 120ml orange juice
No. of Servings:
1

Garnish

Orange wedge

Instructions

  1. Pour the Campari and a third of the orange juice into a highball with ice.

  2. Stir until chilled.

  3. Froth the remaining orange juice and pour into the cocktail.

  4. Garnish with an orange wedge.

Hints

  1. This cocktail relies on the use of freshly squeezed, strained orange juice. Furthermore it benefits greatly from frothing the orange juice, be it with a blender, a milk frother, or by a vigorous dry shake.

  2. Add some Prosecco and you’ll have a Garibaldi Spritz. Alternatively, you can try mixing the orange juice with grapefruit or other citrus.

Trivia

  1. This cocktail is named after Giuseppe Garibaldi, an Italian general who helped with the unification of Italy. This drink combines Campari, a liqueur made in the North, with oranges, traditionally harvested in the South.

  2. After participating in an uprising in Piedmont, Italy, Garibaldi was sentenced to death, but escaped and sailed to South America. He assisted with other revolutions and led a group called the Garibaldini, who wore red shirts, much like the color of this cocktail.

  3. This cocktail was revived in 2015 by Naren Young for the bar Dante, in New York. They use a high-speed juicer to aerate the orange juice as much as possible.
