Ingredients

  • 60ml dry vermouth
  • 30ml Bénédictine
  • 2 - 4 dashes abinsthe

Instructions

  1. Add all ingredients into a mixing glass with ice.

  2. Stir until chilled.

  3. Strain into a coupe.

  4. Twist an orange peel over the drink to express its essential oils and garnish with the twist.

Hints

  1. If you don't have a dasher for your absinthe, note that 4 dashes equate to 2.5ml, half a barspoon or ½ teaspoon. However, since it can easily dominate a cocktail, feel free to reduce it to fit your palate.

  1. While the most popular version of this recipe comes from The Savoy Cocktail Book (1930), it was first printed over a decade prior in Hugo Enslinn's Recipes for Mixed Drinks from 1917. Enslinn's recipe had equal parts of dry vermouth and Bénédictine.

  2. In the Savoy Cocktail Book, Craddock notes that the Chrysanthemum cocktail is well-known and very popular in the American Bar of the S.S. Europa, a German ocean liner built in 1928, and which crossed the Atlantic in 5 days.

  3. Per Difford's guide, the Chrysanthemum may be named after a 1904 piece by composer and pianist Scott Joplin, which was released on record in 1916.

  4. That being said, the Chrysanthemum plant, which features a beautiful flower, tends to symbolize friendship, happiness, and well-being. They're a popular fall flower and are often tied to the arrival of autumn.

  5. In Japanese culture the chrysanthemum symbolizes royalty, longevity and rejuvenation. Whereas in Chinese culture they symbolize happiness and vitality.
