Hints

  1. Adding a drop or two of vanilla essence will turn this cocktail into a delicious dessert drink. Alternatively, try adding 7.5-15ml of Licor 43.

  2. You can add orange zest as a garnish to cut the richness from the egg.

  3. Orange pairs well with this cocktail: You could split the brandy base with dy curaçao, for example.

  4. Make sure you dry shake for long enough and with enough force to allow the egg to emulsify and properly combine with the other ingredients.

  5. Try this recipe with other spirits, particularly those that have been aged in wooden casks.

Trivia

  1. The term flip comes from the practice of flipping, which means to rapidly pour a mixture between two containers in order to combine the ingredients.

  2. Flips have been in our history since at least the 1600s, be it with brandy, rum, or even ale. When served hot, sometimes they’d be additionally heated with an iron poker right before being served. The hot iron further mulled and frothed the drink, imparting a slightly bitter, burned taste.
