Instructions

  1. Pour the lime juice and the tequila into a salt-rimmed highball glass with ice.

  2. Top with Coca-Cola.

  3. Add a small pinch of salt and stir gently.

Hints

  1. Per the drink’s creator, the secret to this cocktail is to stir it using the same knife you use to cut the limes. Bonus points if the knife was also used to cut peppers for salsa!

  2. Don’t be afraid to try other types of tequila with this drink - Reposado works particularly well.

Trivia

  1. Created in the early 1960’s by Javier Delgado at La Capilla (The Chapel), in Tequila, Mexico.

  2. Per Delgado, the name Batanga stemmed from a day in which he ran out of regular highball glasses, and the nearby store only sold a rounder type of column glass. When he came back to the bar he announced that “they didn’t have highballs, but they had batangas” jokingly referring to a short and stocky friend of his.

  3. A Batanga is a type of small canoe originally used across South East Asia, including in the various Archipelagos and islands of the Pacific.
